Okay this is how I understand things:

Actually, it all started from a "proposal" that was initially rejected (proposed TO Pops and rejected BY Pops...rejected by Dr. Quebengco also). It was just a proposal, right? Jill Samodio's "study" on a merger and reorganization was written in the form of research paper. Riding on the coattails of Transformative Learning and banking on the fact that DLSU is aiming to become a research-based university, Samodio wrote a "research" or a "study" rather, that supposedly prefers that The Chamber Ensemble would merge with Pops Orchestra because the former is lacking in the instrumentalists that the latter has an abundance of.

Former members of Pops, if they still want to be part of the Lasallian Youth Orchestra (LYO), are open to audition but there is a huge draw back. If you audition and turn out to be up to par with (ridiculously) high standards, you get in. However, if you audition for a specific instrument but are not qualified, you have the option to learn another instrument. This is so problematic because an overlooked option is to choose to be trained further with that instrument (like what Pops has been doing for a long time now, heck, even De La Salle Zobel).

Rehearsal schedules for the LYO is something that I have yet to understand though, but it is based on common free time amongst members. If this would be the case, the students would hardly have time to study, what with a trimester system, 4 school days, and a freshman load of 21 units per term. One comment from one member went along the lines of "you now become an artist-student, instead of a student-artist. This means one thing: burn out, and a chronic loss of passion.

Members of LYO will also have a "contract" which requires the student to perform so and so number of performances. Basically, this means that members will have to be on call. Excused absences are supposed to come into play here, but not all professors follow excused absences. This contract thing would also mean that if the student has a final exam, he should still perform because it's in the contract. This would still count as an excused absence, but then again, not all faculty follow the excused absences.

Back to the whole "research" and "paper" thing. Jill Samodio wrote a study which supposedly continues a previous study that she made. I've leafed through this (in the spirit of free academics), her sources mainly cite the Cultural Arts Handbooks from way back 2003 to 2008. She includes minutes of the meetings between her office and The Chamber Ensemble, as well as written historical accounts of The Chamber Ensemble. She does not include in her sources the history of the DLSU Pops Orchestra, and from what I hear, she even uses Wikipedia. Some research paper. It's lacking in resources and is lop-sided.

This is what happened at the assembly

From outside the STRC, we moved to the bandroom in spite of it's use for an on going rehearsal, then we settled at the stairwell inside STRC.

The alumni who were there at the General Assembly this evening were there for support and if anything else, to find out what the hell was going on. The officers seemed to have exhausted every avenue of communicating this to every person they needed to talk to in the Administration from the looks of it, their emotions got the best of their reactions. Who can blame them? Were they wrong in feeling angry or in feeling sad? Surely, their reactions were rash and violent, but they weren't invalid. Not to say that they needed an excuse for violent emails and whatnot.

The current members were encouraged to move on and let it be. To let them merge and reorganize with the Lasallian Youth Orchestra just to test run the thing and manage glitches in the system. That's well and good. The DLSU Pops Orchestra has evolved in so many ways but then again being what it is after 25 years is nothing that can be taken lightly.

The reality of moving on, for every Pops Orchestra member, as far as being a student of DLSU or CSB is concerned, happens when you graduate. I've never had that because I was a dormant member for most of my college years. I only returned as a faculty of the Literature Department and I wanted to take a stab at singing once again.

The assembly had no choice but to meet outside the STRC because the Chamber Ensemble was there, rehearsing. I found this peculiar. If the reorganization (and the ultimate disbanding) is to take effect next term, then why are they taking up the rehearsal space right now? It's official, but it's not implemented yet. (edit: It was confirmed that the use of the band room was given permission beforehand. The Chamber Ensemble need equipment that the DLSU Pops had. Their rehearsal was scheduled before the GA. Nagpaalam naman sila. -pjba)

We wanted to have a place to talk and it was raining outside and we weren't provoking anyone. I hope that the people rehearsing inside understood why we were there. I'm sure they aren't stupid.

It seems that the reorganization will happen, but only because certain alumni said that it has to be accepted and that it's out of anyone's hands at this point.

Here's what I think

I did not have much to say during the assembly. I took a step back even from those who took a step back themselves. The alumni were there because, first and foremost I'm sure, they wanted to know everything. Facts are essential, of course. The current members asked for this assembly because they needed help and they've done everything they could. It has been established that this is unfair, life is unfair and that there is a need to move on.

But personally, I think that the center of this whole this is that it's wrong. It's just wrong. It doesn't make sense. From the way it was proposed to the way Jill Samodio thinks she can get away with a lot of things (aside from just this), to the way other higher ups do not know exactly what is happening.

I don't fully agree with going with the whole thing because it disregards the hard work that it took to bring together a group as solid as this and it disregards the work and dedication of Sir Eli.

I find it disrespectful and lack of good taste to abolish the cultural heritage that really is the first Pops Orchestra of the Philippines.

The reasons and the implications of the reorganization are impractical.

From what I have told other people, they find that Jill Samodio's motives are just so she can have control over the orchestra. That'll be handed to her for sure. But I'm sure she won't be hearing the end of this.

How I think I can help

Blogging is one way. Another is to read the darn thing (the actual proposal) and answer back. Like I said, write to Samodio. With everything said and done (and posted and emailed), nothing can taken back at this point. But the point if my writing or blogging is to somehow expose (too harsh of a word I know) the errors to let it be known that this is wrong.

Mabuhay and Pops. Mabuhay si Sir Eli. Mabuhay ang La Salle. Mabuhay ang katotohanan.
